I've just watched the film "Idiocracy".
The basic premise is that, because humans are free to breed as they like, natural selection favoured the dumb (because there were so many) and survival of the fittest had gone out of the window.

The film is set 500 years from now where, instead of being all sci-fi with hover cars etc, futuristic earth looks like one big advertisement board for takeaway food and trash tv. The American President is a former porn star and pro wrestler, designer clothes are made by fast food chains, and humans are barely one step away from being cavemen again.

Anyway, my question - do you think this future could be likely, given that the poorly educated breed more than the educated?

Well, the poorly educated, as you like to put it. Are more then likely alot more primal then the educated. You know those guys, the one's who just have sex with multiple women, get them pregnant? Or those gals tha merry guys with a load of cash? It is survival instinct. Gold diggers know that more wealth equals better social status, which equals better chance for the offspring to survive, and better chance for those offspring to bare more offspring. They may not come to this conclusion, but it is hammered into our DNA.

The same with that horndog guy who just bangs multiple women, he is ensuring the survival of the human race. The more women he has sex with, the better the chance is for him to procreate with that woman, and the better the chances of our race living on.

They are really just reacting to deep rooted primal urges to reproduce, survive, keep their race alive. So who is it that are really dumb? The ones who keep the human population from declining, or the ones who don't? It works hand in hand, really. Those uneducated are just a different kind of smart.

I wouldn't worry about that mumbo jumbo you saw in that movie. There are always going to be smart people around, who lead the world into scientific revolutions, and new eras. There doesn't have to be many of them, either. Albert Einstein was just one man, that one smart man changed the face of the plane forever with the creation of the A-bomb.

Well I can't stand the IQ tests because they really don't test real intelligence, but given what you really mean, no it won't happen.

Look humans have been at this for quite a long time and the trend has not produced dumb people, and there is two very good reasons why not. One is if you get too dumb you die. After all that is really the only thing we have over the other animals, they are better in every other way. Two is that the smarter people usually find a way to control the dumber people.

Not at all. Intelligence is not that simple, nor is it that clearly dependent on genetics. Yes, genetics play a part, but so do experience and opportunity. When children are given the proper nutrition, a decent home environment, plenty of encouragement, and plenty of stimulation, their IQ scores go up on average.

Your last sentence is also flawed; poor education does not equal low intelligence. Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Carnegie did not have the benefit of excellent private schools, but no one can say they were stupid.

If we don't want to increase the numbers of "stupid" (I guess that really means nonintellectual and not curious) people, then we need to make sure we give all children a real education. Not teaching to tests, which destroys the natural love of learning, but a school environment that encourages questioning and exploring. Andrew Carnegie knew, and now Pittsburgh has world class museums and an excellent public library system thanks to him.

Poorly educated does not equate with lack of intelligence. So the answer is a resounding "No!"

What is frightening to an extreme is that people are not using their God given gift of intelligence as we romp into the 21st Century.

Perhaps we should be looking at the causes of this as we gaze questingly to the future.

My money is on ingested chemical pollutants in food, water, drugs and the air we all breathe.

Could it be that the world is the way it is because the smart people have found a way to keep The Rest of Us occupied and docile? How much time and energy is spent on watching TV? Earning money so we can be just like the Joneses? Jumping through hoops (vs. learning) at school?

And don't get me started on HS sports that leave kids too exhausted to learn, dieting that leaves girls without any glucose for thinking, and the idea that yes, babies and toddlers really do learn more when tended in large groups by a stranger than they do when they are nurtured by their own parents.

Sometimes I wonder -- is this a conspiracy, and if so, who's behind it?

You point out his IQ numerous circumstances and then say that it is not appropriate. it variety of feels that it does be counted. and you have an strategies-set which you're plenty smarter than he's. isn't it style of ineffective to think of which you're perfect ninety% of the time and he in basic terms 10%? So, he asks questions. in line with possibility he purely desires to understand. loosen up and refer to somebody else approximately Quantum Physics.

The dumb people you refer to aren't dumb, they are reproducing in order to raise their tax credit credentials. I know women who had kids at 16 so as not to work, and have lived in council accommodation for over 20 years at our expense. I know of people who have 4 or 5 kids and then refuse to work claiming they must stay at home to look after them, or, they work minimal hours so they don't earn very much and claim the rest back in benefits. Some people think kids should be licenced, im not sure that would work, but people shouldn't be allowed to breed when their only agenda is to raise their benefit credit. Mick

It's already happening. Although I think what rich smart people are left will be the masters of these mentally retarded masses. They would have to revolt against the pockets of intelligent evolved humans before they could take over completely.

If people don't have children, who will pay your pension? Governments are making it more lucrative for people to have bigger families because countries need population. If you want the same values to be perpetuated in a country then the native people have to have enough children to maintain the status quo.

It makes perfect sense... dumb people seem to think there is nothing better to do w/ their time than to "knock boots."

"Hey hun, there's nothin' on TV... Wanna go 'do it?'"

And maybe if they were smart enough to use protection there wouldn't be so many darn kids running all over the place!
