A lawyer doesn't "step in" - a lawyer is hired by a party to a dispute to attempt to resolve it in a way that serves the party's interests. If someone has hired a lawyer and your position is at risk, you have two choices:

1) try to resolve the matter yourself
2) get your own attorney, to represent you.

In order to decide which option is best for you you should consider the nature of the dispute and the odds that it will result in a lawsuit.

The lawyer must not entertain a bad case and must try to let the parties settle their dispute amicably. The wrong question must be corrected if there is no cause of action.
