Breeding takes a LOT of money to get a profitable operation. On the other hand, I started an aquarium maintenance business a little over 4 years ago for about $3,000 ($2,000 advertising, $1,000 supplies/equipment) and I'm at the point that I'm averaging about $600 a week. I'm not getting rich. I am working a lot of hours. I drive a 2005 Kia Spectra station wagon which gets 27 city / 35 highway. I started with my old Blazer, which got about 17/23. If I still had that, I'd make a lot less, as I log a LOT of miles every week.

I guess it would depend on what kind of breeding you are talking about.

Hobbyist breeding, selling the high-quality fish produced (no license required)?

or..

Mass tropical fish breeding?

It depends on what type of fish you want to breed .some are eggs layers and some are live bearers....i have raised betas, angel fish ,guppies...i use to sell them to the pet stores in return they would resale to the public.....so decide what your wanting to breed.....then research or buy a book on them. i have a book called "handbook of tropical aquarium fishes", it's a great book on breeding.....

For starters, you'll need a license, assuming you are in the US. Then, you will need to find importers in Indonesia and such for the fish you want. Once that is set up, get tanks. Lots and lots of tanks. Fill them with the proper balances of heat, light, and water salinity.

Starting this type of business is no easy task.

If you are in the U.K. you will also need a licence, a friend of mine looked into it a while back and found that its a "cornered" market, there is some firm in the Midlands he visited that on the grounds of them supplying him, and found that he was way out of his league! Good Luck and hope all works out well.

Go to your lfs and ask them what fish they want, and try and breed them.

buy a male and female fish of the particular species you want... you can find them online by particular vendors or at some select stores.
