The reason in Sociology is called Relative deprivation. More money can only increase your happiness if you are living on a stressful level of struggling to get by. Once you have a comfortable income anything more than that does not make you happier--what happens is people compare what they have to someone who has more and are therfore deprived in comparison. People can live the simplest poor lifestyles and be content as long as they are unaware that anyone has it any better. So being rich does not make you "happier" but it often makes you healthier (eat very well and can afford the best health and medical care)
Sorry- the second part of your question: one reason being rich can lend to unhappiness is when you're rich, people suck up to you, many of them just after a piece of the fortune. Not knowing who your friends really are, who you can trust, if someone loves you or your money.

It all depends on what makes you happy. My Children make me happy all the time. (Ages 13, 8, 5) Money can never replace this feeling. No amount what so ever. For those who cant believe this, Believe it because I mean it. If that feeling was money, Bill Gates would be saying "Wow, thats alot of money. Money can pay the bills, buy you nice things but it cant buy you unconditional love.

Hello,
I mean to be a little light hearted in answering this but actually I mentioned to several millionaires that money does not always by happiness. Their answer to me? Ha, the only ones that say that are those that don't have it!

No, money doesn't buy happiness. What it can do is help you feel more secure. When you can pay all your bills and be able to buy the things you need or want.
However, if you aren't happy with who you are, no amount of money can change that. That is something you can only work on.

Material things don't normally keep people happy. I mean yeah its great that you don't have to worry about financials, but I think you are always looking over your shoulder making sure that people aren't using you.
If you are alone its hard to be happy. Unhappiness can lead to all sorts of health issues and what not and money can't buy you health, sure it can buy you treatment, but that doesn't guarentee that you will be okay.

People need to have some kind of challenge in their lives. If your goal in life is to acquire money and things, you'll be very sad and bored when you achieve it and have nothing else to strive for. People with passions that don't revolve around material things AND have tons of cash are the ones who have it made.

Money doesn't buy happiness, it just makes being miserable a whole lot more bearable (lol). Hapiness is each person's own responsibility

it's easy, happiness can never be bought. Buying anything you want doesn't really help, it somehow satisfies but you know things are things they still get rotten, destroyed and lost some how.
