Same thing happened to me. My computer would literally take half an hour to load and after a few weeks it crashed and the anti virus wouldn't start up.
I went back to the symantec website, used their removal package to get everything removed and requested a refund. They were pretty good about refunding it.
I've just followed the advice of the yahoo answers community and downloaded AVG - very good and free, and easy to use - and all this is coming from a non tech head!

If you have a DHCP server you can I would setup a firewall on that. That way your computer doesn't need any anti-virus or firewall. The thing that I hate the most about norton is that it starts up at the worst time. You can stop it from turning on at start up by click on Start Menu
go to Run...
type "MSCONFIG"
and look in the start up tab,
It'll list all the programs that start up when you turn your comp on. Turn off what you don't need like norton. It'll increase your computer preformance dramatically. Even if you're not using the programs they're still running in your RAM. I turn everything off on my computer.
As for if you should uninstall norton completely; I would check to see how much speed it's taking away from my computer. Hit CTRL, ALT, and DEL at the same time. Look under processes and look for norton. If it's taking more then 50 Percent of your computer speed I would uninstall it.

Norton is the worst AV on the market!
It even checks your files while NOT on the internet! If you are serious about computers, it is not infected to start with. So, why does norton checks you "doc" file when you open them in Words? Totally useless.
I have removed over 100 Norton copies, for the great pleasure and satisfaction of everyone.
There are many good AV around, and often free: you already have lists above.
All together, you just need the firewall of XP, and a little bit of safe browsing. Avoid visiting porns, free music, hacker's underground, free images (except google!), chatrooms and you will be safe.
Stick to this rule: if the site you visit gives you things for free, it will cost you! (adware, spyware and viruses)
Decent sites are harmless and designed by decent programmers.

It's up to you, but NOD32 is a great Antivirus software. It's very easy on memory. If you're behind a router, there's really no reason for a software firewall. If you require a software firewall, Zonealarm isn't too bad, and it's free.
If you decide to remove Norton, use the Norton Removal Tool provided by Symantec, it will get rid of all traces of it.

System works is a good program, easy to use, and definitely provides security. But it does slow down your system. I only run Norton's anti-virus and firewall and haven't had too many problems creep up on me over the past couple of years.

That's what Norton does, I tried it once but would not use it or recommend it to anyone.
AVG or the windows one live software will protect the computer just fine so remove Norton and try AVG which is free or Windows Live which you can try for 90 days for free before paying for.

Troubleshoot what is slow, right click on the task bar and open task manager. See which process is taking either the processor or memory. It might also be temporary slowness while it updates the system by pulling down a database of virus definitions. Try to verify what is responsible for the slowness.

How much RAM have you got and which OS do you have??? If you have Windows XP, get at least 512 MB RAM and if you are on Vista, make sure to have at least 1GB. Norton is a resource hog, so as you have already bought it, your only alternative is to upgrade your RAM.
After your Norton subscription expires, get something better like ZoneAlarm or Kaspersky or BitDefender. They are more efficient and less resource hogs.

Norton is notorious for slowing down pcs.
Suggestions include changing the scan options to exclude some file types, thus reducing the number of files that are scanned.
