Hubby is a term of endearment for husband. It's like calling someone, Cutie, Sweetie, etc. I always call my husband, "Hubby". It's just softer, sweeter and not as serious as husband.

Generically speaking it is a "husband" -- a term of endearment referring to your male mate. But be careful not to exchange the "h" in "hubby" for a "c" as in "cubby" which is indicative of an older woman who has taken a (usually much) younger male as their mate. In which case you become the "cougar".

It's slang, mainly meaning "husband". However, the term has been slightly stretched beyond its conventional definition, and can be used to describe a fiancee or long-time boyfriend.
