they grow on trees. You can start a plant from the avocado pit. It is slow growing, but a nice way to get a plant for free.

Buy one at the store and try sprouting it. I have a three foot Avocado Tree in my kitchen window that I grew from a pit.

In most areas, if you go to a place like taco bell and ask for avocadoes, they will think you are from California.
But they grow on trees and are fruit, not vegitables.
