Well, I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "reformat" in this sense, but in general, I'd agree, you probably need the installation disk. A crappy installation if Windows XP is pretty standard, though, so depending on your problem, and how old your computer is, you may need advanced hardware to fix the problems. I'd recommend looking at different operating systems. Windows 2000 is the last really stable distribution that doesn't really give you any problems, and you can use a program called WINE (Windows emulator) to run programs that require XP or Vista. But usually, "reformatting" means completely wiping the hard drive and putting a new filesystem on it. This will destroy all data that you don't have backed up on another disk. Whatever you plan to do, make sure you back up extensively, NOT ON THE HARD DRIVE YOU'RE REFORMATTING, before doing it.

Dude U havent said do u have the driver Cd's of ur hardwares with you? If u dont have those things with u then i will ask u not to format ur computer. Because it will wipe out every informations of ur computer hardwares. But if u have that with u will definitely need a cd or dvd of windows XP. In the case of laptops(specially IBM Thinkpads) they have a special key. by pressing it u can have ur original factory settings restored.
But if u have a XP cd and u have addotional partition on your hard disk u can install the XP in that partition without wiping out the older one. And in that case u will not need the Drivers. Hope this will help you.

I'm not sure why you aren't the administrator of your own computer? But the way I did it with mine was by going to the control panel and clicking on the performance and maintance link on the bottom of the pop up window. Then if you look on the upper right hand area of the next window that opens, you'll see a system restore link. Click that and then just follow the directions that come up. Hope that helps. If for some reason the computer refuses to allow you to do this, contact the individual that you obtained your computer off of and ask them for the password, or to come over and change the password to one of your choosing, If this is impossible to do, then you may have to send it to somewhere like circut city and have them restore it to factory settings for you. It may cost some money, but that will at least enable you full access to your computer.

Depending on the brand, there is a keystroke combination that will reload the os and drivers just like it came from the factory, even without the cd
