I have three canaries, I wont lie they can be annoying when you want some piece and quiet and they wont stop singing. They can also be quite peaceful. They'll get stinky if you don't keep them clean. It also depends what type of bird you want. Different birds make louder or quieter noises. There pretty easy to take care of you just need to make sure you give them food and water. And most importantly keeping there cages clean. Well i hope I was of some help to you!:)

I had 17 birds in my home at one time. A dove, 4 canaries, 4 parakeets, 2 cockateils, 3 finches, 2 parrots, 1 conure, they were awesome, my house sounded like a rain forest. The dove was annoying but the rest were fine. Cleaning the cages was an all day job. That was my Sunday project, and I didn't just remove the paper liner and replace it, I put the whole cage into the shower and scrubbed it down. Some of the birds had free flight during the cleaning, others, like the parrots stayed in the cages and truly enjoyed the mist of water on them. They'd spread out their wings trying to get clean everywhere. If in the event you hose off the cage with the bird inside, don't spray him directly, let the water splash off the cage to wet him, and make sure the water is not cold or hot, slightly warm is fine. If you have a big bird, he will most likely try to get directly under the stream of water. You don't have to dry them, they will do that themselves. Birds do like to get wet, thats why there are bird baths in yards. And some birds are noisier than others. One of the parakeets only made noise in the middle of the night, and she'd get all the others in an uproar. I had to keep her away from the rest if I wanted any sleep. If you want a quiet bird, go with a finch, they make little squeak noises. Bigger birds are loud, like parrots and cockatoos, I mean really loud. Song birds, like canaries are my favorites, although they do sing a lot, like a hundred times a day, but its a peaceful, relaxing song. Doves, I'll never do that again. They coo endlessly. Birds also give off dander, so expect some dust. A lite spray with a water mister helps keep that at bay. And like I said, they don't mind getting a little wet. Good Luck

I have two parakeets. They really don't smell at all. They smell in pet shops because they are in those goofy enclosures.

Parakeets are small but have BIG voices. They chirp all day until dusk and start as soon as the sun starts to rise. You can cover them at night to deter any night-time chats. If the chatter will drive you crazy then I wouldn't bother. Remember also that the bigger the bird the louder the squawk.

Parakeets as well as other birds (I would imagine) are very destructive. My keets are given every toy, food, cuttle bone, and millet imaginable and they still want to peck paint off the wall and chew on my crown molding. If you don't want to worry about destruction don't buy one.

I have finally given up on hand training my parakeets. I have had them for about a year now and they just hate people plain and simple. At least mine do. Although I have to give my one keet justice...he doesn't mind me so much but the female won't get near me and if I try to pick her up she bites. Just because I haven't found very loving parakeets doesn't mean you wont. Maybe. Remember: The bigger the bird the harder the bite.

I know my answer doesn't look promising. But just because I haven't had luck with them doesn't mean you won't. I have had luck with my ferrets though! lol Very social little buggers.

I never had a problem with smell. Keep the cage clean. Most birds are cool. Some are a Horses Butt, but usually from a bad previous owner. You may have some seed husks and feathers get on the floor when they exercise their wings. A quick vacuum take care of it. It just learning to take care of things easy and it not be hard. My birds always fly free around the house.
A loving parakeet will sit on your shoulder as you watch TV and you can interact. If, it poop, it about the size of a BB and if the bird healthy you just shake your shirt and it fall off in the trash. A cockatiel lay a bigger poop, but, it too shake off.
I would suggest a parakeet to try. They fun and can be a Hoot when they tame. If, you find this not something you want it not a lot of money and you can easily give it away to someone who want.
I tried to find a good web-site about parakeets (budgies as first answer says, she too give good info). Some off on too much BS. Keep the bird warm, clean water and food and I have NEVER had a problem. They may get the sniffles in winter, just keep them warm and cover the cage at night with a towel when you ready for them to sleep. The link I give seem to be down to Earth without a lot of Hoopla.

Not if you let them perch on a stand during the day and keep them in a cage at night. That way, they are more exposed to the surrounding and are less bored. When they less bored, they tend to be less vocal. If you do keep birds in a cage, cleaning out the cage once a while will maintain a healthy and less smelly environment.

The only time birds are smelly is when you fail to clean the cage. Mine is 12 years old now, and other than his occasional temper tantrums he is great. Conures have a tendancy to be a little rowdy, so you might be better to go with something like a cockateil or bugie. They are both great beginners models. Both can be taught to talk with a little patience.

I have 2 cockatiels that have their basic care needs met, outside cage time etc, but they drive me nuts. I'm keeping them because I got them, and it's my responsibility, but they are very annoying. I've had them for almost 9 years now, and I know they are well taken care of, but I will never have birds again.
