I have a Dell Dimension E520 and I want to upgrade my video card, but to do this i need to upgrade my power supply.........I asked dell if it was ok to buy a more powerful power supply that would fit into the case (probably a 500 Watt) They said not to do it because this system has not been tested with a bigger power supply and it may damage the system.......personally i think this is BS since people say that your PSU only uses the needed power and no more than that......but i just wanted to see what you guys think......should i upgrade the PSU or not?........I REEEALLY want this new Video Card so i can play F.E.A.R maxed out in HD on my new 20 inch Samsung =] (seamlessly, without any lag, which i have with my current Geforce 7300 LE : ( )

Thanks alot

Either the Dell technician is st*#%& or he does not really know anything about power supply units (PSU). Why would the big names in PSUs produce 600, 750 and 1000watters if those will just ruin enthusiasts' PCs.

Go ahead with your upgrade. Better get ATX V2.01 or 2.2. They are stronger on the +12V rail. The new video cards draw a lot from the +12V rail. Perhaps something like this w/ 396 watts on the +12 rail.

The retail PSUs have 150mm (5.9 in.) width. Better measure your current PSU. Same width ensures compatibility w/ mounting holes on the case.

Your right, Dell is full of BS. A PSU of a higher wattage damaging your system because it hasent been tested???? I will tell you what could possibly damage your system is running a PSU of too low a wattage.

Sounds like you have already decided on a Vid Card, just make sure you get a decent PSU, and that it will fit in your case. Have fun gaming on your new monitor!

Good luck
