What is the best (cheap-under $700) for pre-teens? Our child wants a laptop since we have had our computer for 10 years and she wants to have a computer that she can do stuff on...if so is this a good laptop?http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspn_1501?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19 and for people who have it, does it come with powerpoint and other word programs?

Another thing is that we have had our computer for ten years so it is really slow and we need a new computer that we can all share.

if you were to get a laptop may i suggest an acer travel mate they are very good.i got one,but before i got one i looked around it is lightweight and very dependable.they run about 715 dollars.a little advice from a dad see about getting a upgrade on your desktop first that might be cheaper also

I understand that you want to make your preteen happy, and that you want to be viewed as a "fun mom!" But, don't take this risk! Sit your child down and explain to them that very bad things can happen. COMMUNICATE!!! Otherwise, they won't understand why they can't have a laptop.
I'm not just saying this to make a child mad; a mom feel guilty; and to get some points. I'm saying this because I live in a small town, and one of my friends thought that she was safe, too....Her dad bought her her own personal notebook. She was so happy! A few weeks later, she was reported missing....I guess that she had talked to a man in a chatroom that she didn't know....
The world's a scary place. Don't let your child enter it until *you* can be there right beside him/her. Get a family computer and warn your child of the risks of the internet.

A pree tenn does NOT need a notebook computer. The PC should be in the family room. A preteen will quickly break or lose the notebook and from the parental safety point of view, youre asking for trouble. There are ALOT of stalkers out there!

It good, but as one parent to another, I do no think it wise to get a kid a lap top unless you can see what going on online. There is to much bad stuff out here in the WWW for a kid, and they do not even have to be looking for it for them to find it. why put yourself in place where you have to be dealing with a issue. buy an desktop leave it in an common area in your home, use parental controls keep you kid safe.
