an algorithm (you were pretty close) is a mathematical formula that adjusts as new data is added.

Like, if you've ever seen those Roomba vacum\ums, they operate on an algorithm - the vacuum "learns" the room by adjusting the calculations as it moves through the space.

A search engine "learns" what you are searching for through algorithms - what key words are used, how many times they appear, are the words in the body of the site or just in the url address, where is your local area and is the thing you're searching for more likely to be useful to you if it is local (restaurants, movies, etc.) - stuff like that. Every time you search, the results will be more accurately tailored to your preferences because the engine has "learned" what you need.

Now all we need is an algorithm for men and the world will be a much better place! :)

algorithm

An algorithm (pronounced AL-go-rith-um) is a procedure or formula for solving a problem. The word derives from the name of the mathematician, Mohammed ibn-Musa al-Khwarizmi, who was part of the royal court in Baghdad and who lived from about 780 to 850. Al-Khwarizmi's work is the likely source for the word algebra as well.

In mathematics, computing, linguistics, and related disciplines, an algorithm is a finite list of well-defined instructions for accomplishing some task that, given an initial state, will terminate in a defined end-state.

The concept of an algorithm originated as a means of recording procedures for solving mathematical problems such as finding the common divisor of two numbers or multiplying two numbers. The concept was formalized in 1936 through Alan Turing's Turing machines and Alonzo Church's lambda calculus, which in turn formed the foundation of computer science.

It's just a stupid commercial for a search engine called Ask.com.

An algorithm is a mathematics term and is probably used in reference to the programming that makes the search engine work.

An algorithm is a computer science term meaning a written out plan for you to follow why making a computer program work. I think this was a great question.
