This is a very interesting question. I am a Christian and I go to church, which means that I am not opposed to religion, but I don't like to think of myself as a religious person. I like to think of myself as a spiritual person because God is spirit. So, hmm...I think I'm a juxtaposition of religion and spirituality; yet, I avoid that section like the plague.
I agree with you that religion can cause division. People become nit picky about personal preferences. I have seen people leave a church over whether or not there were snacks offered after the service or whether the music was too loud or too quiet. I used to feel burdened by religion until I read The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life and then I started to see how God is not limited to a religion. Anyway, I'm typing this at 2:30 AM, which will make it somewhat incoherent. I'm sure I'm rambling also. I could probably go on and on answering this one.

Well I suppose that depends on how someone defines "religious" and "spiritual". I'm more spiritual in that I don't believe I have to go to church every Sunday to prove that I believe in God. I've had a lot of different church experiences and done a lot of Bible studies outside of church as well, and I prefer to be in the company of others I trust rather than walking into a church. The fact that so many people who say they believe in God can turn around and act in a way that God would not approve of bothers me a lot, which is unfortunately one of the reasons I don't go to church. I do consider myself a Christian and I consider myself more spiritual about it than religious.

lol - you can't call yourself a spiritual person if you have hate for anybody, including, no especially those who believe differently than you.
There is no difference in religious and spiritual beliefs, when you think about it. Part of belief is understand that you do not choose truth. Truth is truth, you accept it or you deny it. Covering it up and making your "own" truth is only lying to yourself. Being humble and accepting truth, putting it higher than your own will, is the power behind religion, and the reason that so many people can't do it.

I classify myself as a Christian,but I don't attend church.
And I'm not a bible thumper. No one would know I'm a Christian unless they came out and asked me.I think religion is a personal thing.
