The top selling brand by far is HP. Very good value for the money. Too many factors to consider; like price,screen size, usage. If you go to my source they will give you great free advice about buying a laptop. They do reviews on all the models and brands.

Dell Inspiron 1501 i a great all round computer at a good price. You can customize it as you order. If you are a student or teacher you can get special educational pricing on al Microsoft products inc. Office. The discount can be up to 70%. My copy of Office 2003 Pro cost me $130 when the retail price was $400.

Office is a seperate purchace.
BEST Falcoln northwest, XPS, alienware or voodoo. Best VALUE, Dell followed by hp compaq and toshiba. You can buy as much or as little storage as you want. The larger the siz the more files you can store, but the less reliable the hd will be and the more you will lose when it fails
If you can wait, price wars will occur in July, hold off until then unless you need it now

Check to see if it's an ASUS motherboard. I would advise at least 512mb of RAM if you are running XP and 1Gb if you will be running Vista.
You don't need the most expensive processor on the market, go with a Pentium D 2.2GHz (Intel) or Athlon 64 X2 4200+(65W) Windsor 2.2GHz (AMD).
As far as overall manufacture goes get a Dell or ASUS. ;)
I don't know too much about Macs, but I've heard good things.

Macs are the best. You should get a Macbook pro. It does not come with Microsoft office.
