Just built my computer last week. Here's the order I used:

1. Decide on what processor you want to use. I picked up a Quad Core q6600. Regardless, choose between AMD or Intel and the power.
2. Decide what type of graphics card you want. I used my older x1950pro, but the 8800's are really nice cards.
3. Decide what method of cooling you'll use - either traditional or water cooling.
4. PIck a motherboard that will work with 1-3. I got the EVGA 680i, which I'm very happy with.
5. Pick a case that is big enough to fit your selections from1-3.
5. Pick a power supply that will support your system.
6. Get some RAM.
7. Get a DVD Burner, CPU fan (or water cooling), sound card, etc.
8. Put it all together!

I would order parts off newegg.com and read the reviews. You'll see a lot of examples of compatability on there.

Hi, good choice in building your first computer. First of all start shopping for parts like on newegg.com Great prices. Anyway first I would find a motherboard that you liked and a processer that will fit. You have AMD and Intel. Right now Intel is in the market for the greatest processors but AMD is in it for the greatest performance for your buck. Go with the big thing first and then build off of that. Like motherboard, probably ATX Mid tower case, and then Power supply depends on what video card you have and the amount of fans that you have. Let's say that you are getting an AMD X2 3600+ with Nvidia 8600gts 256mb GC and then Asus Mobo=W/e and then you have 18X dvd drive, you will probably end up needing a 650 watt power supply just to be safe in the future proof of the computer. When you are building to, it is not needed but try to look for after market CPU coolers. Anyway that is just brief, please e-mail if you have any more questions. thnx!

you should really start with the motherboard. try to pick a motherboard that has as many pci slots as possible so later you can upgrade easier. then find a compatible cpu, ram, and video card. then after that the hard drive and optical drives(dvd-rw,etc.). next you should buy all the optional pci cards like sound cards, tv tuner cards, etc. the last thing you should buy is the case and power supply. for the power supply, try to get the most powerful one that is within you budget because it will ensure that you will have enough power for your components
Also dont forget to buy cpu fans or cooling parts for your comupter
a good site to buy from is www.tigerdirect.com and www.newegg.com
if you have any other questions feel free to email me
Good luck!

Find a good shop for parts, like http://www.tigerdirect.com
Buy the case (includes power supply), matching form factor (size) mother board, CPU and a fan for the CPU. Assemble that first. You'll see what parts will fit into it afterward, if a hard drive board is needed or if that is built in the motherboard.

Buy as you need it, test along the way.

Aistaire has the best answer. If you had to ask, you might want a frined to walk you though it. Fortunatly the cabling is very easy now. DO NOT get a mini case, esp as your first computer
