insufficient memory. It might be infected with a virus or spyware i suppose. How can this be cured? I can't even access "my computer" or "control pane" because of insufficient memory.

Start in safe mode. This will load minimal drivers and aps. If you can, add more ramm at this point, then reboot. Then start uninstalling the junk. This is NOT a hardware issue, it is software. First go into start up and disable everything. Then restart. This will have freed up enough now where you can do surgery. Get out all the AOell, weatherbug, hotweb, crimewire, bearshare, screensavers, toolbars, etc. NOW you will be free enough that you can back up your good data.

Then after your data is safe reinstall windows, reinstall you antivirus (its probably expired). If youre the type that needs support, I recommend trend or kapersky, norton and mcafee are ok too. If youre good enough not to need help AVG or avast are great free ones. Then you need anti spyware. Spynot is good, adaware is good too.

You gave very few details, which are necessary to effectively diagnose your problem. For example, how old is your computer? Which operating system does it have? How much RAM does it have, and so on. However, based on what you have told us, and based on my personal experience with computers, here are a few suggestions:

1. Get and run antispyware and antivirus programs, if you haven't done this already.

2. Your computer seems to lack RAM. Free up your RAM by running all system utilities. Click Start, Programs, Accessories, System tools, and then use every tool in your arsenal, one by one, but defragment your hard drive last.

3. In fact, defragment your hard drive after you have run all system utilities, and then deleted all unnecessary/unwanted programs. Then defragment.

4. If you have a lot of icons on your taskbar, right click on any unnecessary/unwanted ones. A menu should appear which offers you the option to close each program. Close any program that you can, if you can do without it. Better yet, remove unwanted programs so that they do not automatically load onto your computer at start up. Instead, keep your start up programs to a minimum.

5. Consider having additional RAM installed, or else have somebody install it for you, if you don't know how to do it yourself. However, you must open the case in order to see if the computer can accomodate additional RAM cards, or else get someone to do this for you.

If you do that which I have suggested, you should be able to speed up your computer considerably.

Replace your hard drive and then reinstall an operating system on it! There cheap enough and easy to install.

if you have a windows cd i'd just reformat and start off fresh. if you do have the cd, just pop it in and boot from cd. you may have to change your boot sequence in bios so that it tries to read from the cd drive before the hard drive.
