They stay in water, since they are a totally aquatic species (you don't have to provide any land area for them), but not underwater. They need to be able to get to the surface to breathe air.

Tanks shouldn't be more than a foot deep, or they have trouble with the distance between bottom and top of the tank. A few floating plants can give then something to hold onto so they don't constantly have to swim up and down for air.

Yes African dwarf frogs have to stay under water they are aquatic species. They only swim to top to get air than they go back to the bottom of tank. I have 8 of them and they are so fun to watch and very active. Some times they get lazy and float at the time but they still need to stay in water. If your interested in reading a page on how they breed i have great web site i found. Just let me know

Yes, they are a purely aquatic species. As others stated, they have to be able to get to the surface, they will take gulps of air and go back to the bottom. If you watch closely, they will release air bubbles while down there, then repeat the process again.

If they are exposed to air, they literally dry up, and rather quickly, so you have to be quick if moving them. Also, the poster above is correct, these guys love bloodworms. Try to not feed them anything freeze dried, as it has been shown to cause intestinal blockage and death.

Here are two links that really helped me out when I started with these guys.

African Dwarf Frogs are fully aquatic.

They will swim around underwater, and take a quick gulp of air, then continue swimming.

I would assume so, I have two of them and I've never had them on "land". They have been purely water frogs swimming all day/night. They do need air though, so make sure they have access. I've come to find out that my frogs actually like it when I'm near the tank. They like to follow my finger and will swim up to the front when I go near it. I love them!

They have terrible eyesight. The best way do feed them is to but a little ball of bloodworms or blackworms right in front of their faces and they will use their hands to push in all in their mouths. same for African clawed frogs.

Yes, they can survive underwater. They do not need access to oxygen, they just need to be kept underwater.
