1. Increased awareness of how humans affect the environment. We can try and stop the total destruction of the planet that has been snowballing since the Industrial Revolution.
2. Medicine: vaccines, pain management, surgery (which is really cool, if you think about it), antibiotics, antivirals, etc
3. Safer buildings: greater structural integrity to avoid damage in the events of earthquake, hurricane, etc
4. Warning systems: hurricanes; fire alarms; carbon monoxide alarms; car alarms, etc
5. Stimulating interest among the general public: We can find things that interest people, such as panda bears or Keiko, so that they care more about the world and our fellow inhabitants. Places like museums, zoos and aquaria allow knowledge to be appreciated and passed on, as well as encouraging donations and further study.
6. Increase in the length of a human's life: We can prevent many diseases that once killed people in childhood (tuberculosis, scarlet fever, etc). Also, better nutrition and health/preventative care have extended life and improved quality of life. The only (and MAJOR) problem with this is overpopulation - we've reduced the natural reproduction limits and are pushing the carrying capacity of Earth.
7. Communication technology: radio, satellite = internet, cell phones, digital conferencing, etc. This can save lives (dialing 9-1-1, calling in bank robberies, etc). It also improves trading so that a "better" standard of living can be brought to more people.

Great answers by everyone else above...

Scientific discovery is what has allowed you to type that question from the logically encoded/programmed computer.

Imagine yourself being in the year 1300 A.D. you will know how far we've come. Amazing! Words would fall short, you will need to write a whole book just to list and briefly describe the advantages of Scientific method and inventions.

How about that computer you're using? Your cell phone? The fridge? Microwave oven? How about the fact you're alive today, due to modern medicine and vaccinations? Half the kids born used to die of easily preventable diseases.

Without it, you might not be here. No electricity, very little materials to build anything. There would be no computers, cars, radios.
Medically, it saved billions of lives and prolonged them.
