YES, they use industry standard. You will then need to reload your OS, if you dont have the disk they will send it free, even if out of warranty. They might not send your "resource cd" if the notebook is too old, but you can download to another computer and burn to cd. You need IN THIS ORDER. Notebook system software, intel chipset driver, video card, audio, nic, wifi, most people dont have multi card readers or modems.

you can use an external USB casing that can accomodate IDE or SCSI hard disks, and can be accessed by the laptop as external hard disks
