Males are the ones' with really long flowing fins. The females have much shorter fins and once adult are usually fatter in the belly. Here's a picture of a female:

Everyone is right about the long flowing fins and more color on the male, while the female has short fins. Sometimes young males still have short fins and just have to be a little bit older. On some of the newer colors, such as cream color, you can't always go by the color. The males have a slimmer body. That mirror test is also a good way to check. I forgot about that. Because the males are always fighting and only have a small fish brain, they don't recognize them self.

When you want to get the fish to spawn, put the male in a tank no larger then 5 gallons, and turn off any bubbles. He has to make a spit nest, and any water current or bubbles would break up his nest. The female will be full and round with eggs. If she is not ready to spawn, remove her immediately or he will kill her. Try placing her in a tank next to him so they can see each other. You can try putting her with him every few days.

After he squeezes the eggs out of her, remove her because he knows that she will eat her eggs, and for this he will kill her. The daddy Betta has to keep blowing the eggs back into the nest, to keep them from drowning.
They eat infusia, which is some small creatures that you hatch out for food. I also heard of using just a little bit of cooked egg yolk for food to.

I have males also an the females dont even look like the same breed of fish, they are small browenish looking and most people think they are ugly. Go to your local fish dealer and ask for a female, they will know what to give you. If you put to males in the same tank, they will kill each other.

A male Beta has more elaborate fins and color. The female are very "sleek" and smaller. Don't put them together in a small tank. When you do breed them, buy a book. The male will eat the "eggs" or "fry" (babies) and the female needs a layer of grasses on top of tank to lay eggs in. They have to be seperated from any other fish when there are "fry". (females might eat also). Males get agressive to the female if he's in a mood also. I know temperature and levels have alot to do with it also. It's not easy! Please click on the website link that confirms (I hope) my information.

if the fins are long and flowing and it has beautiful colors then it is a male.

The females have short fins and are not really pretty. Their colors are a lot duller...but the short fins are a dead give away. The body of a female is shorter also

put a mirror in his bowl and see if he tries to fight it. A male will puff all out at his reflection.

Male bettas are big, colorful and have long tails and fins. Females are very drab in color and short tails and fins.

You also need multiple females to one male in a bowl to even attempt mating. They get violent.

There are quite a few characteristics like fin length, ovipositor presence/absence, flaring posture, bubble nest building, and color that would indicate one gender more than the other: http://ausaqua.net/files/sexingbettas001.html

The trouble is, there are bettas that can be exceptions to most of these rules.
