You practically answered your own question. Women played roles "in society," by appearing in public at functions with their husbands, and "at home," by staying there with the children. Largely...

Ladies, the question was about the 1950's - not the 1940's. "The War" ended in 1945.

Women in the 40's had a duel role....During the war many woman went into the armed forces as nurses. Or they worked to support their families since many men were off to war... In the fiffties their was a shift as well as a baby boom (go figure!) and woman were primarily homemakers, spending time raising their families and taking care of their husbands. Which caused many women to question their roles in society as a whole..This is explained very well in the book "The femine mystique" by Betty Fridan.... I hope this helps.....
