It is legal to swim any stroke during a freestyle event. Really the only way you can get D.Q'ed in a free event is to either touch the bottom of the pool or pull on a lane line or something ridiculous like that.
You can even swim fly during the free part of the medley relay, but you must notify the official prior to the race that you will be changing the stroke.
Be careful though. Even if you really like fly and want to do in a freestyle race it may come across as cocky to those that are swimming against you. Make sure you don't do it in poor taste to rub it in or something.

It's freestyle. That just means "get across the pool and don't touch the bottom, and don't use water wings or innertubes". If in the unlikely event you are a faster butterflyer then a front crawl swimmer, go ahead. You'll probably get whooped by a lot of people, but you can try.

Technically yes, but the original crawl or freestyle is always faster. Most competitive swimmers use a "dolphin" kick or also known as the kick used in fly once they dive into the water. Then, one they break they break the surface of the water use the a "flutter" kick also known as the kick used in freestyle.

hahaha, don't listen to that girl that "knows a ref". in a freestyle event, you can do any stroke you want. i mean, at least under high school and YMCA swimming rules that's how it is, but i do believe it's like that under USA swimming to so you're pretty much covered on all bases.

If it's a freestyle event, why would you do the fly? You can't do freestyle during a fly race ... you'd be D.Q.'d!
