What is wrong with playing the Pirates? Yes, they might not be the best team in baseball right now, but they are still a team in baseball. Are you trying to say that the Yankees are too good to play the Pirates? Why dont the Pirates just hand the series to the Yankees now and not bother to show up?
Maybe they are playing the Pirates because they did play them in the World Series before, so it could be replaying history. Just dont write off the Pirates.

the american and national league teams still play interleague after the 'rivalry' games are done. They do this on a rotational basis every year by division. So to answer your question, the Yankees are playing the pirates this year b/c the AL East must be playing the NL Central.

Interleague consists of games with your rival from the other league (ie: Yankees vs Mets, Giants vs A's, Rangers vs Astros). In addition to that are games with another division from the opposite league. Every year the opponents change, NL East will face teams from the AL Central one year then maybe AL West the year after that.

They play another round of interleague play. They just dont play their crosstown rival during interleague play. True the Yankee playing the Pirates may not be a great series, but thats Bud Selig for you.

The Orioles do NOT play any teams from the NL central, aside from the Nationals in the NL East the Orioles play the D-Backs, Rockies and Padres.
I'd say if you want to know why the Yankees are playing the Pirates, ask the schedule makers.

because of the fact each and every team performs a 162 activity schedule, in spite of what place they're in. the only exception are the occasional rain-out on the tip of the season that may not made up because of the fact it has no result on who makes the submit-season. Who do the Yankees play this week if the Royals purely verify to %. it in? The contending communities might desire to end out their schedule, too, and maximum of them are taking part in communities that have been eradicated. Plus, it fairly is the time of the three hundred and sixty 5 days the place minor leaguers get spoke of as as much as tutor what they might do. There are those with jobs on the ballpark that don't gets a commission if the gang would not end the season- food distributors, fee ticket salespeople, protection, ushers, etc. Plus, there are interior reach television contracts to fulfill, advertisers who sponsor distinctive components of the communities' activities. you may desire to be between the little ones who had to end because of the fact your team wasn't winning. loopy how that follows you thru life, isn't it?
