On the way home today the speed odometer stopped working and the van would not go into 2nd easy and would not go into 3rd at all. We changed the filter, gasket, and cleaned the pan really well. It still does not seem to want to go into 2nd or 3rd.. Can someone help?
I do not have the money to pay for it to be put in the shop.

it is computer controlled and you need to hook up a scanner to find the problem. It is probably a speed sensor causing the problem because if it dont work then the trany dont know when to shift. if you had fixed that problem first and reset the computer it would have been over and done with.

The problem is the speed sensor. It's location could be at different places according to year model. It happens mostly to vehicles with anti locking brake system. The speedo and the trans don't work right because they don't get a speed signal from the speed sensor. good luck!

I have owned a repair centre for 10 years, and, although you don't want to spend if you don't have to, I would have it looked at professionally. You may get away with a Vehicle Speed Sensor, but it really does sound like an internal transmission problem.

Your astro has a VSS that is linked to the speedo cable. If the speedo is not working it can not tell the ecm the speed of the truck and will cause the trans not to shift when it should. Fix the speedo and the trans should work fine.

Try manual shift up if no, are you using a reusable air filter, like a K&N. If yes oil in this filter cloges mas sensor and will cause trans failure. When you drained the pan was there a lot of debre in the pan, around the magnet. If yes metal sealing rings gone, need rebuid or good used .
