Even the XP startup sound plays a minute after I have logged in.

it will be a bit slower to start up but it shouldnt slow it down after that, any anti virus will slow dowd the pc a bit but avast is known as being very good and not slowing it down too much, i use avast and am very happy with it, even my laptop has it and it slows it down a bit more than the desktop because of the smaller specs but it is still not that bad, it is quite acceptable

I have Avast and love it.
I have a laptop & found a lot of other programs like Avast really made my computer slow. I have tried so many different ones too. Someone suggested Avast and I have noticed my laptop improve a lot.
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling? Maybe something messed up when you installed it. Do you have another program like to Avast that maybe slowing things down?

If your web surfing is slow, try turning off the Web Shield in Avast.

I use Avast on a lot of customer's computers,and no, its not normal, unless your PC is really old and lack of memory

Try running a scan. Also keep in mind that any application that has real time shielding is going to slow your computer somewhat! Peace!
