Painting icky-tasting stuff or even pretty polish on them doesn't keep me from fidgeting with them and peeling bits off the ends. What can I do to make myself leave them alone?

put a rubber band on your wrist(s).whn you start biting your nails, snap it and you will eventually give up the habit.

Chewing gum. At first, you'll still chew your nails even with gum in your mouth, but you get fed up pretty quickly with bits of fingernail getting stuck in your bubblegum. I kicked the habit this way in my early teens. You have to be very careful not to let yourself start picking at any snags or hangnails you find though, or you'll chew one off and decide "what the heck" before going after the others. I did that a couple years ago (after being a non-biter for nearly 10 years), and for a couple weeks I was back to my old ways until I actually LOOKED at my hands and remembered how nice they'd looked such a short time ago; after that, it was easy enough to quit again.

Will power. Go find some.........

no but honestly, you should just tell yourself you dont want ugly hands or ugly raggity crappy nails. People who have naturaly short nails tend to bite them more, so if you give your nails the chance to grow out you'll aprretiate them more. I mean mine are starting to grow out after years of biting and im like yaay i dont want them to be ruin. So like if it chips or something i just file it rather than bite it off. YOu do more damage biting your nails than filing them. But if none of this works I suggest getting some acryllic nails they will grow then, make sure its a top notch shop though. And your nails also might be like really brittle, i changed my diet around to healthier and noticed that my nails getting harder which makes them harder to bite :) Protein promotes nails growth and exercising and the right diet ;)

Good luck :)

I had the same problem, i bit my nails to the skin. I think its much easier to bite them, then cut and file them. Its a nasty habit and heres what i did. Got braces. it made me stop but don't worry you don't have to get braces. You buy mouth gaurd things at almost any store. They prevent you from biting.

Carry a file/buffer at all times. Use it whenever your hands are free, and therefore, snackable.
Keep them in your car, purse, desk, where you watch TV, etc.
[ Use the ridge smoother only about once a month, but you can smooth - shine - polish as much as you want! ]
