I've emailed it to my senators and the White House. I think it is so relevant to the upcoming immigration vote. After all, aren't we the UNITED STATES? It's beginning to feel a bit like 500 nations crammed into our borders......

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

2n2222-I doubt highly you've ever been near an area with a large immigrant population. Many illegals are REFUSING to learn English -- many thanks to Clinton for signing an EO to REQUIRE interpreters for those unwilling to conform to the customs of country of their choice. No one has a problem with bilingual immigrants--I do have a problem being FORCED to learn a foreign language to accomodate someone who chose to come to an English speaking nation.

Naturegirl--then I'd cordially invite you to go to your land of heritage. No one is denying you pride in that--but since you clearly hold the US in contempt--don't let the door hit you on the way out~

Teddy said it, meant every word of it, and he is exactly right! That's exactly what being an American is about. The libtards don't believe it, but that don't make it any less true.
The clown using Teddy's picture in the first answer is insulting a great man and is probably a libtard because only a libtard would put on a false front like that!
And you get a star and an A+ for a good post and for sending it to DC.

It might remedy plenty of issues for individuals who can't discover paintings. Teddy Roosevelt was once a bipartisan genius who strived for a ordinary well and all set America for the twentieth century through running with capitalists, extending the railways and constructing the Panama Canal, simply to call a couple of. If an immigrant come right here and does no longer even attempt to be taught english it suggests to me that they don't seem to be excited by fitting an Americna or serving to the nation. Five years is a fair time interval. Many of my friends don't talk english and I am presently enrolled in spanish categories so I might speak with them affectively. I am no longer sour approximately that, however would it make experience if it have been the wrong way round? Great query, incidentally...made me feel!

Yes but thank God as an American I am free to fly additional flags and speak as many languages as I want. Just because you see a group of ethnic people speaking a foreign language don't assume they don't know English. Those girls at the nail salon have know problem with English. It's just that you bore them and they don't really like you. So, they use the sure way to keep you out of the conversation. If you are not a Native American then your linage is that of an immigrant. And they did not hold the language of the land or it's customs but instead blended in their own.

If more understood the nature of this statement we wouldn't have such a mess. Sadly most european immigrants have done just what that statement says yet still are waiting for citizenship. Meanwhile the govt groups all into one group and makes decent hard working ethical immigrants take a back seat to the many illegal wetbacks which belong back in mexico or simply shot dead and rotting along the border for others to see as an example.

The prior poster is correct, Teddy never said that. That "quote" is paraphrased, so why it is in quotations is beyond me.

But he did say and mean what is brought out in that paragraph. And I agree with what he's saying.

The following is the direct quote of the letter to congress:

"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here does in good faith become an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with every one else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed or birthplace or origin. But this is predicated upon the man’s becoming in very fact an American and nothing but an American.

"If he tries to keep segregated with men of his own origin and separated from the rest of America, then he isn't doing his part as an American.

"We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile. We have room for but one language here and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans, and American nationality, and not as dwellers in a polyglot boarding house; and we have room for but one soul [sic] loyalty, and that is loyalty to the American people."

What makes you thing this is OUR country, there is no such thing as "american" culture becasue the very first people to come here (besides the native americans, because we killed most of them) where immigrants. That is what sets america apart from the rest of the world. There is no national culture, but a blend of different ideals, beliefs, and customs.

2n2222 says "our immigrants have always behaved this way", referring to refusing to assimilate and learn English. But that is not true. The Vietnamese who came here worked very hard to teach their children to be American. My father's family emigrated from Germany in 1910, and they worked hard to become Americans and learn the language of the land.

As a Puerto Rican American (who lives in michigan) I have this:

If you'd like to be an American Citizen, learn English. If you'd like to preserve your culture, learn that language. Remember, not everybody in America is from the same descent as you. over the time of 231 years, we've decided to make it our unofficial language. If you're not going to speak it, leave. And Don't let the door hit you on the way out, because us content american citizens who pay taxes don't want to pay for it.

It's hardly an issue. Our immigrants have always behaved this way. Note that when he speaks of English here, he's not saying that people aren't allowed to speak whatever is comfortable for them in their own homes; and for that matter business has long been conducted in whatever language is convenient: Indian diamond traders in New York learn a good deal of Yiddish, because that's the language that was used in that area for so long.

The more varied our immigrant mix is, the better off we'll be. I'm proud of the different groups that have come here.
