It's easy if you recognize that (x+1)(x-1) = x² - 1, the difference of two perfect squares. Then you can simply multiply x² -1 by x to obtain x³ - x.

Remember, for any two numbers a and b, the product of their sum and difference, (a + b)(a - b), yields the difference of their squares, a² - b².

a - b
---------------
a² + ab - ab - b² = a² - b²
