Some department stores sell a $90.00 brother machine that works ok for hobbyists.
You'll soon learn that it's not just the number of stitches that matters, but whether you are sewing for long stretches of time, or sewing on heavy materials. That's when you will want to go for a higher-end machine. I only ever use 2 basic stitches, but my machine cost $700.00 because I sew for a living and I can't afford for it to wear out on me.
I also have a Dressmaker (that's the brand) that I got for $35.00 in the newspaper classifieds. It sews only straight stitches.

If you have the time, check out local garage sales. I've seen some very nice older machines go for about $10. My Singer zig-zag is 40 years old and still going strong as is my Grandmother's Singer treadle machine (straight stitches only) that's far older than I am.

Go to a reputable dealer who works WITH customers (not all do) and can help with machine problems. They have trade in machines as well as bottom line. Do NOT be taken in by "surplus school machines". No such thing. They are cheeep machines made just for that. The machines at non dealer stores are manufactured just for them, lower quality, no help. Or, check garage sales and Goodwill for machines that are just unwanted but good.

Try a local auction house. I always buy my expensive hardly used items from mine. They always have household items. Cheap too. I got my clothes steamer for $6 and retails for $225 new. I also got a big dehumidifier for $4 that is $160 new. Check it out. Spend $10. You'll find something.
