The benifit of the nitrogen filled tires decreases when you add air, but if you are fine with that, there's no problem.

Huh? Why would it not be OK...air is over 78% nitrogen.
And what's a nitrogen filled tire supposed to do that air filled tires cannot do? Can't be a fire supressant, cause the tire will burn outside along the hot roads anyway...and the outside air is more than 20% oxygen.
Perhaps if you add some detail to your question, you'll get better answers.

how can it hurt? there is all ready nitrogen in the air. It does not do any good unless you let all the air out and refill the tires with just nitrogen.

Since nitrogen is in the air it should be ok to add regular air to the tire. Probably mess up your gas milage though. Cheers.

Consider that the air you breath is mainly nitrogen(nearly 80%) there is not going to be basically any difference. Why they do that? My guess is: everything oxidizes. Oxidation requires oxygen(both in the water H2O and in the air). The oxidation of steel is called "rust". If oxygen was removed, no breakdown or decomposition would occur. So pure nitrogen has no oxygen. Nothing to react with the rubber. So it stays new longer.

Topping off with compressed air won't hurt, tire experts say, and the tire can be purged and refilled with nitrogen later.
