Anticipate your customer's every need. If they order burgers, automatically bring catsup, mayo, mustard, hot sauce, etc. Keep the water glasses filled. Only ask once if anything else is needed and not when they have just taken a bite of their food or when they are engrossed in conversation. Be stealth-like. Everything should appear on the table smoothly and without drawing any extra attention to you.
Greet them promptly after the hostess seats them and take their drink orders. This is the time you have to draw attention to yourself. Introduce yourself and say something nice, witty, funny, or thoughtful---whatever is appropriate at that moment. If you really take this moment to connect with your customers and you truly care about the service you give them, then, your tips are sure to improve.
On another note, after honing your skills and seeing a dramatic upward increase in the tips, then you'll know that you are ready to move on to a more challenging type of restaurant where the earning potential is greatly broadened. Best of everything to you!

I can tell you what customers hate about wait staff in restaurants and maybe you could avoid those pitfalls:
1. Waiters who take the order and don't return to check up on you except to set down the food and later to play up to you for a good tip.
2. Serves meal or beverage without giving you table napkins or utensils, gets an attitude when you ask for them.
3. No sugar/sweetener or ketchup on table.
4. Waiter talks too much and gets too personal.
5. Waiter takes the man's order before the woman. Forget about women's lib. Women still want to be first.
6. Waiter is too touchy-touchy and inappropriate, calls older women honey, sweetheart, acts condescending.
7. Waiter charges for items not ordered.
8. Waiter automatically adds tip to the bill without customers being told, and then expects another tip.
Just be very courteous, efficient and professional and you should be alright. If you make your customers' dining experience a pleasant one, you will do well.

You need to find a job in a more 'upscale' restaurant. My husband and I have to eat out....business related dinners. The tips are huge becuase the meals are very costly!
We always like friendly, helpful waiters...service means everything!
You might look into upscale hotels, too. The porters make a fortune. You have to be strong for luggage lifting, etc.
It is important to work in the finer restaurants. The people are often older and have more money. They also have sons or grandsons and see you with those eyes. :-)

As a customer, I must say that I am much more likely to tip well if I have a down to earth waiter/waitress who I see as a peer, not just someone kissing my butt trying to get a dollar out of me. I am much more likely to tip people who are personable.

if you make them smile you will have a higher tip.. joke or some comment even innocent comment about the weather .. if the first one does not make them smile try a second one, and a third one; when they laugh stop with the jokes and continue only with the good service.
