Cable internet is a shared bandwidth solution. what this means is your neighborhood link is a maximum of 10MB..as an example.......

If someone in your neighborhood (one of your neighbors) is a heavy internet user, your speed will be effected. I had Optonline for a few years and was curious about the speed trend overall.......I ran a ping test for about 7 days and found that overnight, I had speeds upwards to 6.7Mbs while during the day my speed dropped to around 3-4Mbs. This speed further dropped over the weekend.

It is possible you have a person in your neighborhood running a peer to peer app like bittorrent or Kaza like app..........or they have a virus.

Call Opt and complain that your speed has decreased significantly over the last few days and they will run a neighborhood test to find the culprit

Is your ISP a Cable TV? I suspect so. CATV uses a main feed line (usually fiber) shared by many on the main feed. If the users on the feed become heavy, the speed slows down as it is shared by all on the feed line.

Check the speed at different times of the day (and select times when most users are not likely on) and see if it improves.

Also the ISP may have added more users perhaps temporarily to bridge over a defective segment. Give them a few days to get things back to normal.

From what you say, all seems ok with your equipment. Get your router back on line as this will provide added firewall protection.

i assume its a cable modem
all cable users are cont together
so at 5pm when the kids get home from school they all get online at the same time laggin the network
5mb was the adversed speed
yours may vary lol
which means they can slow you down as much as they want so they can over sell bandwidth.
