Record companies spend a lot of money one drugs, alchohol and suing 14 year old kids for downloading music and not a lot on actually finding new music.

Part of the process is to get yourself noticed. Recording companies employ A&R people, whose job it is to find new talent.

Unfortunately because they have to justify themselves they mostly find copies of successful acts. When grunge went big in Seattle, recording companies went around signing huge deals with complete loser bands, but failed to see the whole grunge scene start up.

Here is how to get a recording deal that may or may not work.

Record a demo. You can do a live recording or most likely if you are in the music biz you have a friend with a home studio. So recording is pretty cheap.

You may want to record a demo with a professional producer. They can make several "mixes" of your work, including the way you like and a maybe a commercially orientated mix.

Get your demo out there. Post it on music downloading sites, hand copies to people who know people who know people.

Do the myspace/youtube thing. For the cost of some video tapes you can record a music video and put it online (an Australian band got huge exposure for their song with a $200 video posted on youtube). You can make a create video by talking to your local media school or college. A student might want to do a clip for you, at no cost, as part of a student project.

Also, perform. Build up a vibe so people get to know. Make videos of your performance to show to record companies.

Do some promotiional stunts to get into your local street press. I don't know, perform nude in central park to promote road safety awareness.

Basically, just beat down the door. Be crazy on the camera and in pubic, but be business like in the offices.

Also consider this. Most of the money from producing a CD goes to the recording company. Which means you really only make money from playing gigs, unless you are immensely successful. Which is why you shouldn't care whether people download your music for free, because it is good promotion. Recording companies are evil and downloading does little to hurt most musicians, only the record companies trying to exploit musicians.

If you independently produce your own CD you can make a lot of money from it.

Easiest is find a good recording studio and cut a CD. You may have to pay some bucks and you may have 100 CDs to give to friends, hopefully they give you $5.
Find a manager that know this stuff. Give him a CD.
Go to bars where some locals play your style of music. When they ding-donging around ask them if they have cut a CD and if they know a good manager. Talk to more than one band.
