two things--the fuel pump is cooled by the fuel and you could have burnt it out---or there is air in the pump that won't purge out. there is a scrader valve or pressure test port on the injection rail. with the key off. press on the valve core and see if any trapped vapor is in it or fuel. turn key on for10 sec. then keep trying until fuel comes out in a low pressure burst. Don't do it with the key on--or you may cause a dangerous fuel spray. if after 3 attempts the pressure doesn't restore and car run--the pump is shot.

Running the fuel pump dry on those cars kills the fuel pump. Need to check the fuel pressure and see if the pump is pumping. If not, I think those can be accessed from under the right rear passenger seat through an access cover. No need to drop the tank.

Look on the fuel runner on the injectors for a Schrader valve. It will have a plastic cap on it and inside is a valve stem similar to a tire valve stem. It may take 2 people if it does not have a constant pressure pump. Depress the valve with the key on and bleed the air out. Beware of gas squirting out . If gas does not come out , crank the engine. If gas still doesn't come out the fuel pump is bad.

You may have burnt out the fuel pump. With out gas to cool the electric motor it can short out. Also Fords use a fuel cut off switch in the trunk. I cant see how it could be tripped, as it is designed to trip only in a rear impact. Check to see if the switch is tripped, if not check to see if you have power to the pump by testing the wires going into it. If you have power going to the pump that means the pump failed

Pump in the tank is probably fried---whenever you run out of gas in fuel-injected vehicles, the pump over-revs and overheats and burns out....the gas in the tank helps cool the pump.No gas--no cooling. Have the fuel pressure tested to see if the pump's bad and see if it maybe just blew a fuse.

If you had the car towed check the inertia switch, which will trip if car is pushed or bumped, this switch shuts off the fuel supply. The switch is located on the rear right side shock tower, look for red button popped up,push down and start car.

Try holding the gas pedal down as you start your car. It could be because the engine got flooded with gasoline after you refuel the car.
Otherwise, check your starter or fuel pump.

if you left the key on or tried to start it for several minutes after it ran out of gas, you may have burned up the fuel pump.

your fuel filter is prob clogged or your fuel pump is broke you shouldn let your gas run out of gas because when it gets low it sucks the crap that sits in the bottom of your tank into the filter and pump you
