Generally it's a disowning of something and has a variety of psychological ambiguities. To be shut out or excommunicated before you are accepted is one kind of alienation. 'Excommunication' is the more general choice of communicating a persons alienation. The alienation of self from self is the most common kind of alienation found in religion and mind controlling cults.

"C. Alienation of Property
§ 65

The reason I can alienate my property is that it is mine only in so far as I put my will into it. Hence I may abandon (derelinquere) as a res nullius anything that I have or yield it to the will of another and so into his possession, provided always that the thing in question is a thing external by nature. The key word in that paragraph is 'will'. The intricacy of the 'will' concept is examplified in the following:

"Stage One Oral-Sensory: from birth to one, trust vs. mistrust, feeding; (hope)

Stage Two Muscular-Anal: 1-3 years, autonomy vs. doubt, toilet training; (will)

Stage Three Locomotor: 3-6 years, initiative vs. inadequacy, independence;

Stage Four Latency: 6-12 years, industry vs. inferiority, school;

Stage Five Adolescence: 12-18 years, identity vs. confusion, peer relationships;

Stage Six Young Adulthood: 18-40 years, intimacy vs. isolation, love relationships;

Stage Seven Middle Adulthood: 40-65 years, generativity vs. stagnation, parenting;

Stage Eight Maturity: 65 years until death, integrity vs. despair, acceptance of one's life.

The Will is positive, the Judgment is negative.

We alienate ourselves from the true God
whenever we worship idols (1 John 5: 21),
when we forget that He sent his only begotten son
to die for our sins, (John 3:16; 6: 44;) and when we forget
to worship Him alone in spirit and truth. (John 4: 24).
We alienate ourselves from the true God,
when we obey men as ruler, to whom no salvation belongs,
and forget to make sure of all things, (1 Thessalonians 5: 21)
We alienate ourselves when we dismiss his Word of Truth
which would set us free, and worship false gods
(2 Corinthians 4:4, John 8: 44) as we uphold
false religions' leaders and our own ancestors,
as to please them and not God... Proverbs 27: 11...
We alienate God when we refuse to admit He has a name,
that Christ told Him he had made it known,
and we call Him a number of titles instead. (Psalms 83: 18)...
and the list goes on and on...
As we do many things to become aliens
to the true living and Eternal God, as we forget what it
means to have been created in His and his son
Jesus' image and forget what it really means to be "human"
and allow ourselves to think of others as "mentally unstable"
for showing Christ-like "love" towards others
when they don't even know us...
which happened to me
this very day! when a person on Yahoo Answer
accused me of just that for showing loving kindness,
which I cultivate daily as found in Galatians 5: 21, 22.
The whole planet has been alienating itself from its Creator
and is soon to reap what it has sowed...
The last war to stop all others along with all stupidity,
once and for all, namely Armageddon...
Be happy all of you trusting in Him,
as your deliverance has drawn near,
where the entire planet
will no longer be filled with virtual aliens
but with loving brothers and sisters throughout.
