First of all when you purchased any laptop most companies will have a trial version of microsoft office (word, excel, powerpoint and outlook) install into the laptop that you can use for approximately 60 days. After 60 days you are required to purchase the software either online or from a retail store otherwise the preinstall microsoft office will cease to function. I know for a fact that a mac laptop or desktop computer does not have any microsoft office preinstall onto their computers., you have to buy it.
The laptops of today either have a AMD Turion or Intel Core Duo as their main chipset. These are two main processor chips that offer mutli tasking and speed. Think of it as a single chip but with two smaller chips inside. I recommend getting a laptop with either one of these two processors. Another thing you should be concerned about is memory. Most laptops come with at least 1024 MB of RAM (memory). Try to get a laptop with 1024 MB or higher nothing less. As hard drive space is concern the more the better. The standard has been around 80 gigabyte hard drive but I have seen some laptops that offer 120 gigabyte or 140 gigabyte of hard disk space.
One concern that i have with your question is about Microsoft Windows Vista. At the moment If you buy a laptop brand or desktop computer it will come with a pre-install version of Windows Vista no matter if you want it or not. This is because all retailers that sell computers and laptops already have been switch from Windows XP to Windows Vista.
If you want Windows XP on your laptop, I only know of one place that you can request this and customize it. That would be at Dell Online otherwise your stuck with Windows Vista.

You might get a Mac and install boot camp and buy a Vista and install it with the boot camp and you would have a mac and vista in one computer. But you need to run it separate times, needs to be restarted if you want to use the other. Mac carries micorosft office 2004.
For just vista I would get an HP, best major one out there. Have 3 HP's and one of the computers is 7 years. have not gotten a problem with it maybe little but nothing that you could fix.

You can get microsoft office for mac, but the macbooks do not have them installed when you buy them: you have to buy it separately. Macbooks also tend to be more expensive than other brands because Apple makes all of its own hardware instead of having it done in China by other companies, like all the other brands do.
Most PC laptops that you'll get right now will have Windows Vista installed on them.

You can run any windows program on a MAC, but that's just it, It's aMAC, pretending to run Windows. Forget about getting a Mac, not worth the trouble. there are a lot of systems out there, and you can get a Dell with windows XP if you like. You can still get a New Dell Inspiron for as little as $549

mac by far is the best but you will pay for it. if you go mac stay away from microsoft products use open office. just like microsoft office but free.
pc laptops are ok but slower and harmed by viruses.
personal preference here of course. if you do go windows based laptop i prefer AMD processors. HP puts out a pretty good laptop for the money. TRY REALLY hard to find a laptop with windows xp. vista is hard to learn and is a real memory hog!!!

The Microsoft Office package is the same ( or very similar ) for the Mac and Windows
( same manuals even)
you can go back and forth
But any mac program is much more costly than a windows version.
Howerver with the mac you get value.
You will never regret that you bought a mac.

Dell Inspiron 1501. It's a great all round machine at a reasonable price and they will build it to your specs. You can also choose if you want Windows XP or Vista on it.
