I have a 1/2 inch neon tetra and I just noticed a white bump on his side. It's large for the size of his body (looks like a human pimple). Could this be ick - I've seen ick before, and this guy is so small I really don't know for sure. Nothing wrong with my others in a 29 gallon tank, and I have a tank I could set up as a hospital tank, but not really worth it for such a tiny guy. Is it okay to put him in a bowl and let the bowl sit in the tank (to keep the same temp) as I treat him. It says to treat every other day for 3 treatments - I figured bowl for a few hours with the treatment and then put him back in the tank. That way I don't need to treat the whole tank and he will be okay. Will this work? What else could this be?

Okay - no chance of ick. The biggest problem is I had only this fish and one other tetra until today when I got 3 more tetras. I didn't see this until after I added the new ones - I know...what was I thinking? This guy has not grown since I got him about 8 weeks ago - is that normal for neons?

There are a variety of disease that could fit what you are seeing including ich. However I would consider ich to be a long shot as you would most likely see other dots on that fish or on other fish in the tank. Ich never gets to be large spots, it's always about the size of a grain of salt. It's far more likely you are seeing the start of a bacterial or viral infection. I would say to watch the fish and check them again in the morning for any additional signs of a problem.

One thing to consider, ich and other parasites, as well as some bacterial infections, contaminate the entire tank, not just the fish showing symptoms. If you have ich or a parasite in the tank, moving the neon would not help as the entire tank would need treatment.

Below is a link that you can refer to that may help you determine exactly what is wrong with the fish and the extent of danger your other fish are in from the disease.

Hope this helps

If some fish contained in the tank have ich, all of them have an truly intense danger of having it. you elect to attend to the completed tank with an ich eliminating drugs. drugs to apply comprise coppersafe, ordinary remedy, or aquarisol. treatment may be some weeks, because the meds are in basic terms helpful as killing ich throughout the time of one part of its existence cycle, so it takes somewhat for it to get rid of all of it. do not take care of at 1/2 or a fourth power! a twin of with antibiotics and human diseases, fish pathogens can grow to be information against remedies too! in case you'll take care of, take care of the completed dose. I do propose you commence treatment in the hot day. i'm able to easily see the treatment being demanding on the loaches, that are somewhat more advantageous tender. I do desire they pull with the help of okay, yet with out treatment, ich is deadly. raising the temperature some stages will boost up the existence cycle, making treatment speedier. also, including a medicinal dose of aquarium salt is useful, yet isn't sturdy adequate to remedy the ich. also, your nitrates are way too intense! 25 ppm is the max wanted element in a tank, over 50 is volatile! you elect to do a after change ASAP, because the in basic terms answer is dilution. intense nitrates will rigidity out fish, making them more advantageous liable to ailment (as is likely already the case)!
