Those social programs at least attempted to help some of our nation's most unfortunate individuals: the sick, the needy, the hungry, the homeless, the underprivileged, the disadvantaged, and the aged.
That was money much better spent that the TRILLIONS of dollars George W. Bush has squandered on an insipid 'war' in Iraq that had no justification, no plan and no goal other than to 'get even' with Hussein and generate billions of dollars in WAR PROFITS for 'big oil', Halliburton, and the Carlyle Group. -RKO- 05/25/07

They certainly stabilized the lives of many Americans when the country looked more like the Mexican countryside.
Most people were scraping by. Those programs made Americans big time consumers. Now they have their heads down trying to pay the bills and they're not taking care of their nation. Neocons are taking advantage of that and wasting tax dollars on enterprises to enrich themselves.

Yes, they were a waste. Most of the programs were absolutely unnecessary and only made poverty worse. The role of a government, if it exists at all, is to protect rights (not entitlements, which are frequently described as "rights" these days).
