To first answer your question, you should, it's kinda hard to compare the performance of a Core 2 Duo processor to a Pentium 4 (Don't believe the people who say Dual Core equals times 2), primarily because even though the Core2Duo has a lower speed (Ghz) , it is definitely much faster.
I suggest getting the middle range Core2Duo's such as E6300 or even better E6600.
Anyway, first, make sure your motherboard supports the Core2Duo processors, or even if it will fit. (Since there are Pentium 4's that run on Socket 478.)
I suggest getting someone who is knowledgable about computers or perhaps contact me on Yahoo Messenger so I can help you with that.... =)
Lastly, you should also look at your other system components such as video card, RAM and even the OS/Windows being used.

Yea duo core processor is good for gaming but U would have to buy a new motherboard for it. U are currently using a good processor and I don't thing there would be much difference even if u upgrade to duo core. But its better for gaming. u may if u have money . U will have to check your memory card to see to it that it is latest and would match duo core. for smoother gaming U must upgrade Ur memory to 1GB or more and should have a good graphics card.

It will go a lot faster, but why not get a Core 2 Duo? if you're playing a lot of gaming, you should have at least 2 GB RAM and also need a video card of 256 mb or 512 mb the best.

I online game a lot also. It really depends on the rest of your rig. If you VC is really good and you have at least 2 gigs of ram then yes you will see some performance increase.
The biggest increase I noticed with moving to dual core was when alt-tabbing out of games. I can alt-tab out of almost any game and use my computer like nothing is running in the background.

I'd wait for the quad-core. Unless you've got the money to burn. Yes dual-core could help your gaming. It also depends on whether the game takes advantage of dual-core advances.

It will be a better CPU, but can your board support Core2 ??? Socket775 doesnt not meant it will take any S775 CPU, you need to check with the board manufacture first

Core2Duo CPUs are great, but you should also look at your GPU and RAM.
