When I was leaving for a long trip a few yrs ago I called a few State Patrol offices. Surprisingly I could not get a consistent answer from the source!!! LOL. Two of the four said I did not have to slow down if there was NO work being done and nobody in sight. That's the answer I went with but I would call again (and get names) if I was going to do the same thing now...

Legally, the reduced speed limit applies as long as it is still a work zone. As a practical matter. If there are no workers on-site, you are not placing them in danger. A similar question has been asked about stop lights on deserted roads at midnight. I have occasionally seen Police driving though construction zones late at night without slowing down. As long as I stay behind them, I doubt they will ticket me for speeding. I realize they may be responding to a call without lights & sirens. If that is the case, issuing speeding tickets is probably not a priority unless the speeder is an obvious danger.

Yes you must slow down when you approach a work zone.
In Michigan. You must slow down in a work zone, school zone, and emergency zone. Otherwise, you can be double fined plus you can be assessed multiple state processing fees. If you kill a road worker in Michigan while the worker was in a work zone and you are found to be responsible then you can go to prison for 15 years and fines up $7,500.
Please refer to Michigan Andy's Law and make sure you slow down

Sure, keep your speed and take out a few of those irritating orange barrels while your at it. If you get going really fast, you can probably get some air when you hit the usual bumps.

If its posted it the law, some signs say while worker are present. So I assume you could do reg speed if they are not working.

just don't be going way over the normal speed limit. its still dangerous because its not normal driving conditions.
if you get popped you can be slapped with the double fine still.

If the speed limit is marked as lower, yes
the fines, and points are double in
most places. as long as they are marked
they are the legal speed.
