Yup. A friend of mine had one that would beat vettes. He only had a 350 in it too. But then again, it was specially built and was supercharged, special built 700r4, and 3.73 rear gear.
Basically the limitation is your pocket book. If have the coin, I'd say take it to a speed shop, and let them match the block, heads, cam, intake and blower, trans and rear end as a package. There will also be some suspension mods to do as well, but not a lot, as it will try to hook up pretty well by the weight alone. Some 90/10 shocks.. ladder bars...minor stuff!
Love to see it when finished, and good luck!

"mildly hopped up" is NOT going to get an 86 Suburban into the 12's. A buttload of money MIGHT get it there (high 12's). That same buttload of money and a lot of hard work by someone who knows what they're doing MIGHT get you into the low 12's.

I'd try a more reasonable vehicle . . . . something under 4,000 pounds will be easier to do it with.

I remember when the 76 Suburban 454 was the fastest American production vehicle--even beat Vette in that year...almost raced a salesman for pinks with my 69 Charger RT 440. Strip everything out that you can and put in a big block with around 700 hp....Good luck on your endeavor.

Heh. You won't like it.

Look at what they did to get the Maniac Mazda to turn 11's, then double it.

Beauty is, the Suburban's got enough room to stick a small engine in there so you'll have a plug-in hybrid. You'll burn 10s and get 50 MPG driving to the strip. People will hate you.

you need a supercharger or blower to get that kind of 1/4 mile time....
