It is called a mobius strip. It looks like a sideways "8", however, the "line" is twisted so that you can trace it an infinite number of ways.
I was fortunate enough once, as I was participating in a graphics design class years ago, to observe a computer generated mobius strip... and I was able to figure out how to "undo" the twist in the strip. It was an awesome experience. :)
[EDIT]
nanchast: In my graphic design class I was specifically told that the mobius strip symbolizes "eternity," or "infinity," or the "idea of forever and beyond." If there are other symbols that are more specific to "eternity" but not "infinity," I'd certainly be interested in studying them. ;) I guess my question is that are you saying that the examples you give are more specific to "eternity" only, and not to "infinity"?

The figure 8 is for infinity. Eternity is many different symbols-
The native americans believed it was the sun.
So did the egyptians.
The aynkk that represented Isis can also be considered a sign for eternity.
= this is also a sign in scientific realms.
It just depends.

the number 8 and the symbol ~ are considered
to be a representation of eternity or infinity...
however, another symbol is related to eternity or
infinity. that is the mandala or the Sanskrit circle.
it actually means "no beginning and end"

There's an Egyptian symbol for eternity, called "shen"; it looks rather like the greek letter omega. See link below.
