What is the purpose of animals camoflaging? Detailed answers appreciated. thanks!

If you cannot be seen against a background then you suffer less chance of being targetted as prey. Pit vipers sense in the near-infrared, cats hunt with their ears, dogs hunt with their noses.

On the flip side it is easer to sneak up on prey if you cannot be seen doing it. Polar bars are bright white in the visible (except for their noses) - useful in snow. Hunters use ultraviolet imaging because polar bears are black in the near-UV but snow is still white.

So they can a) hide from predators or b) hide from prey so they can do surprise attacks.
