The story of the Trojan War was transmitted to us by Homer around 800 B.C. in the Iliad. The site of actual Troy has been found in Turkey in a place named Hissarlik overlooking the Bosporus. Historically it is very doubtful that a war of that magnitude ever took place. A war for the capture of Troy might have been fought but on a much smaller scale and not for the beautiful Helena but for the importance of its situation right on the trade-routes between to East and the West. It would have been totally in accordance to the way the Mycenaeans lived. War and trade. The time period would be 1200 B.C. If you are really interested read the Iliad. The historical side of the war is another matter that must be studied from the relevant literature on the Mycenaeans and Asia Minor in the 13th Century B.C.
