My son has what one doctor termed a buried penis and another doctor suggested I take him to an endocrinologist which is a doctor that specializes in hormones and the organs that produce them. I have an appt with a specialist 3 months from now!
It is small in size- like half of your index finger and his testicles are small also. He has some feminine attributes such as tapered fingers and some mannerisms. He is attracted to girls (we are very open minded and non-judgemental so it's not an issue either way- just giveing background) but his self esteem is very low.
He has the additional problem of pooping a small bit in his undies if he is stressed out.
Anybody out there have experience with either of these issues? I am working with a social worker trying to keep his spirits up but wonder if there is anything else I should be doing?

Just to add to a few of the responses, I am his mom. And we have talked about function and masturbation. The social worker we are working with is someone he dearly trusts and looks up to. Yes he is a overweight about 20 lbs- he tries to be bulked up for football.
Time may be the best healer, but I want to pursue all of his options. He is a great kid and however this turns out, that won't change. He knows bodies are different and this just may be his.
Thank you all for taking the time to answer! (Okay, maybe not the berry answer but at least it made me laugh!_

The good thing is that he's only 12. He has plenty of development left in him.
A buried penis can be caused by many things, including pubic fat and circumcision. There are also different types, this link describes them:

If it's half of his index finger it doesn't sound that bad if he hasn't undergone puberty.
Take him to the endocrinologist. Chances are that he'll get something like hormone shots and he'll end up well in the end. And good luck, keep positive. =) Hormone problems aren't that uncommon.

First, if he is only 12, patience is advised. Many boys to not enter puberty until much later. Is he overweight? Do some diet and exercise stuff with him - not so that he is the object of "treatment", but because you both probably need to do more (or whatever excuse you can come up with to participate). Don't work at being "non-judgmental" - that is a judgment -- relax and be a DAD. Get the focus off his organs, he's probably just too young and getting a lot of peer pressure that this benighted generation is laying on the very young. Go ahead and go to the endocrinologist if you think it would be a move that gives encouragement to the kid, some hormonal help may be good.
I have a young friend born with a three chambered heart on the wrong side. He did not develop until after a heart transplant at 16 and hormone therapy - he is now 22, 6 inches taller, and sexually mature; the therapy was necessary for his emotional well-being in his case, since his mind had already acquired adult desires.
Forget the social worker, if the kid is messed up they will make him worse - use a really highly skilled and experienced Psychiatrist since depression leads to suicide and it is endemic today among the young. I am still inclined the feel that plain old time going by will fix this little problem.

Get in to see that doctor sooner rather than later. Assure your son that he is fine and normal for 12 he is just starting late into puberty. Then you need to inform him that he is old enough now to have sexual urges and needs to be taking care of these by masturbating. You can get plenty of information for him off of the internet. Or have his dad or an older male cousin talk with him. They do not need to show him how to masturbate just explain the procedure that should be done in private. A few days later he can visit with them on how it went and they can ask questions. Masturbation is okay so I hope you do not have a problem. but nothing will help with his male ego better than a good orgasm.

Support your son like you are doing. Let him know the size of his private area is NOT what makes a man. And see any DR that might help

have you considered genetic testing? sounds like it could be XXY? possibly a mild case, or it could be something the other contributors have mentioned. im just throwing another option out there.
hope that helps.
btw, KEEP UP THE SUPPORT! that is amazing. not many parents do half that.

Give him a lot of unconditional love and take him to the specialist. How many doctors have you talked to? He may have a hromone problem.
