Can a virtual machine be installed to an external hard drive?

Specifically Windows Server 2003 using either VPC or VMWare. Or better yet can Windows Server 2003 be installed on an external HD so that one can boot to that OS (yes my motherboard allows booting to usb?

Only VMware allows physical disks, VPC can only uses virtual machines inside a file.

You need a external hard drive with fire wire 800 that is what makes it faster!
