I just recieved a bill from around 5 years ago, they say it must be payed in 1 week, can they do that? I 've been back with this water company for around 4 years, shouldn't they have given me the bill when I had the water turned on? Don't they have a certain period to bill people?

Even if the statute of limitations has expired, they can refuse to continue doing business with you unless you pay the old bill. Do you have any other options for current water service?

This company sounds like it has its head up where it's dark and smelly, but they haven't done anything illegal. If you received a benefit - anything - that was not a gift, you owe the entity that supplied it. Waiting 5 years to bill you was not illegal, but it sure is bad business - P.O.s the customers if nothing else. The one thing they can't do is add interest or late fees because they never made a prior demand for payment. Hope this helps.

As long as they've had contact with you within 7 years they can try and collect the debt and/or report it to the credit report for you. If you no longer do business with them, don't reply, and do NOT talk with them on the phone. Something as simple as talking with them, or writing them a letter will re start the 7 year limit.

Check with a lawyer where you live to see what the statute of limitations is. It may have lapsed.
