When I can't sleep, I lie on my back, arms by my sides, palms up, and start doing breathing excercises, long, slow, deep breaths, at the same time, tense then relax your toes, work your way up each set of muscles till you reach you neck and face, and continue with the deep breathing. You should breath so your stomach goes in and out. by the time you work your way upyour body you should be pretty relaxed, then just let your imagination do the rest, take yourself to a wonderfully relaxed place, look around, experience sounds, sights, feelings, etc, and just let your mind explore till you fall asleep.

Works for me anyway. Good night xx

I've had a similar problem for several years. When I lay down my mind takes off. I've tried prayer, self hypnosis, relaxation tapes, etc. Most work for a while but they get tiresome.

Here's what I do; I listen to Old Time Radio Programs. The Shadow, Sam Spade, Night Beat, Sherlock Holmes, The Whistler, Richard Diamond, and Gunsmoke are some I listen to. They are half hour programs and quite enjoyable. Usually I'm gone before the first one is over. Occasionally I'll listen to both shows on a CD before I drift off. I buy them on e-bay , in mp3 format, and put 2 programs on a CD. I plug in ear buds and enjoy without bothering my wife.

Works for me! And no I'm not addicted or conditioned. Just a fun way for me.

Melatonin. It's a natural supplement that you can buy in any drugstore. I take it 30 mins before bed, especially if I'm travelling in different timezones. It's something your body produces anyway but by taking it you're giving it a boost. The instructions say to take 3 under the tongue. It's never failed for me.

If that doesn't work, try gravol. You may feel a little hungover though. Good luck. There's nothing worse than lying awake worrying about not sleeping. It's guaranteed to keep you awake.

This may be rough, but don't drink coffee... even in the morning! Caffeine stays in your system. Look for caffeine in what you eat and drink.

Get to bed a little earlier than usual, otherwise, there is a counting of the hours before the alarm goes off. Extra time to 'get to sleep' takes the strain off.

Taking and Excedrin PM (one) an hour before bed drowses the body down. Soft covers, a fan gently blowing in the room, keep an MP 3 player on the corner of the bed. I listen to water sounds...rain, etc. If I allow myself to think, I think about mundane things like favorite clothes I've owned...really boring stuff.

It's a real good idea to have calmed yourself before going to bed...no lively conversations, no exercise, Don't watch lively dramas on TV. This gets your mind to racing. Put your hand on your stomach and feel the movement of your breath.

I say to myself...I am relaxing now...even if I don't sleep, my body is resting...this is good...before I know it, I am asleep!

In time, you will get your body into the habit of resting easily. You just have to change your habits.

Sweet dreams!

Well, start by turning off the computor and the lights and lying down... then what I uaully do is close my eyes and try to imagine exactly where I'll be in ten years time, or at least, where I want to be. And I see myself on this huge farm with loads of chickens and a goat that comes up and nudges you for food. And I'll be one of those domestic goddesses that gets up early in the morning to make breakfast and sandwiches for the family and sees them all off and then spends the rest of the day making cakes and doing paintings with the youngest child. I know it'll never happen (I am far too lazy), but it always gets me off to sleep thinking about it.

Turn on a fan, close your eyes, pretend you're in a tranquil place such as the beach or at a park. Count your breaths until you begin drifting off. Or count backwards from 100. If you aren't asleep by the time you get to 0, start over.

Make the room colder, and put something warm on your stomach, like a hot water bottle. Works like a charm.

Or drink Nyquil.

Listen to music cds without lyrics, like ones of rainforest sounds, or ocean sounds, etc. They relax you a lot.

Also try Sleepytime Tea, a herbal tea that helps you fall asleep without fear of addiction to it. Available at drugstores and sometimes grocery stores.

Sleep on your front without a pillow and your head to one side. It works for me.
