Painting and jigsaw puzzles may be good hobbies and keep you occupied but not much exercise for the brain. You need things to do with your eyes closed. Simple things like: Learn the ABC's backwards. Practice until you can say them as fast backwards as you can forward. You remember favorite songs by repetition, right?
Recite the 50 states in alphabetical order. Say their Capitals as you go along. When you're through with that go for countries and their caps.
Sounds silly? Maybe, but guaranteed to make you think.
Another favorite of mine are math problems. Try multiplying in your head then check the answers with pen & paper.
Do you play Bridge, Whist, double deck Pinochle, Spades, Hearts? Card games will keep you sharp if you really want to be good at them.
Crossword puzzles are great. Not only do you learn new things and words but will retain them for the next time that question appears in the next puzzle. Believe me, they come up more often than you think. These are just a sample of what I do. I'm with you... gotta keep the ol' mind sharp. Hope these are of some help. Good luck. See you on Jeopardy.

It depends on what part of the brain you are trying to keep sharp. For me, I am analytical by nature, so I enjoy staying sharp by doing cryptograms, or reading the racing form(horse racing). In general, puzzles of any kind are an excellent way of sharpening your brain. Just choose the area(s) you wish to sharpen, and find the puzzle the suits your individual need(s).

Actually, you need to do puzzles like crosswords or number games like sodoku, ones that make you think. Remembering answers or solving number puzzles actually exercises your brain. Jigsaw puzzles, maybe but painting would actually be more of a release than an exercise.

Hi, I too have pondered this. I always read, do logic puzzles. Such as: Suzy had 4 red apples she gave 3 to Jon and he gave her a green apple. Then she bought 8 more but in exchange for the ones she had. How many apples did she have in total?
Things like that. Sudokus are also wonderful and Othello.

The most important thing you can do to keep your brain sharp as you go through life is to use it. And the best way to do that, and to use many parts of your brain, is to read. Read books on any topic that interests you, or a variety of topics is even better. Fiction, non-fiction, poetry, anything. Reading will build your vocabulary and expand your worldview, and so it is very important to keep reading, no matter how old you get.
