The word itself isn't racist. But you must understand the time period with which it is associated. Blacks were referred to, and addressed, as negroes during a time in which they were considered inferior in this country. I know it isn't right to assume that everyone who uses this term is racist, but I do understand why it is associated with racism. I don't think I've ever even heard a black person use this word. If you were to pronounce it with an "ĕ" sound rather than an "ē" sound, you would essentially be saying "black" in Spanish. So why not just say black? The word is pointless.

I personally do not like it and this is why. ***** is a Spanish word that means black in reference to an object. So when slavery came about it was important to refer to slaves as objects. If you are going to use a word to describe people of color the proper word that I prefer is Moreno which is a Spanish word for dark skin. Other black people prefer to be called black while others prefer African American. Just ask the person you are talking to what they prefer. Most people will not be offended by it.

As for the person that is calling black people apes. Well lets just ignore that person. Giving that person attention is all this person wants. Ignore this person, report them but don't acknowledge this person.

No, it is not OK to call a black person ***** or colored. A white person has never called me either, and they bet not cause I'll take it the same way as if they were to call me a ******! Black and African American is fine wth me.

***** is an ugly word. I sounds too much like the other nasty n word. I hate racism. they are called BLACKS! are people so stupid that they keep having to continually discriminate these people by coming up with stupid racial terms for them? They're black, African American which ever is appropriate. simple as that. I'm Spanish and I never call them Negroes. To me it's offensive. I don't get mans need to be racist. It doesn't matter what color you are people are people.
